Ian McKellen isn’t a fan of green screens. In fact, during the filming of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”, he found it so tough and demanding that he almost quit. He mentioned this during an interview included in the extended DVD edition of the movie.
McKellen said, “I felt pretty miserable.” He said this regarding the visual effects-orientation of the filming process, since this required him to work in isolation for long periods of time. He even mentioned that “And [I] thought perhaps, has the time come for me to stop acting altogether if I can’t cope with these difficulties?”
Of course, we know that McKellen was able to complete the films. But who can blame him? It is challenging to act when you don’t have anyone to interact with.
