In the recent big screen incarnations of Batman, the character is more agile, since the costumes are made to be comfortable so the actor can be in costume the entire day and also be able to move freely. This however, was not the case for Michael Keaton’s Batman costume for the 1989 “Batman” movie. Especially when compared to the way Christian Bale moved in his three Batman movies.
The black rubber suit triggered Keaton’s claustrophobia, which caused him to panic almost every time he puts on the costume. Keaton’s Batman costume made him feel so suffocated and claustrophobic that he almost asked to stop filming. Every single scene in the Batman costume was torment for Keaton. According to the Daily Mail, Keaton said, “Literally, panic attacks… I thought, ‘I don’t know how I’m going to do this, man. I’m feeling really, really scared.’”
Keaton was able to work that uneasiness into his character. During one interview, he mentioned that “I just worked the suit, man. I let that suit go to work for me — and that’s kind of what you have to do.” In the end, dealing with the restrictions of the costume, aided him in defining his version of Batman.
