What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is an American drama film that was released in 1993. It is about Gilbert Grape, portrayed by Johnny Depp, who is a young man with a lot of responsibilities. He has to care for his overweight mother (portrayed by Darlene Cates), and his mentally impaired younger brother named Arnie (portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio). Johnny Depp reportedly had a difficult time filming the movie since the character of Gilbert Grape was very close to his own. In addition, he also had creative conflicts with the director, coupled with his heavy drinking at the time. These were definitely challenging times for Johnny Depp. Depp specifically had issues with the scenes where Gilbert was cruel to his mother. He called Cates, the actress who played as Grape’s mother, at night to ask for forgiveness for having to say such cruel and mean words to her.
