Milk/Sugar/Pepper Mix

This recipe came out in The Old Farmer’s Almanac some 150 years ago. Fruit flies have been a problem then just as much as they are now. This recipe was used to kill them. Mixing pepper and sugar in a milky solution will lure the flies, and clog their mouth parts with the thick pepper granules. Eventually it will choke them to death. Mix a cup of milk, a cup of sugar, and half a cup of pepper in a bowl. Simmer it in a pot on the stove, and once it has cooled, pour it back into the bowl and let it sit on the kitchen counter. You will notice the flies die one by one.
