Fruit flies live in a wide range of habitats. This pests are very versatile. Any place that stores food, particularly fruits and vegetables, like homes, supermarkets, and restaurants are ideal for fruit flies to thrive. They normally feed on the yeast cells that grow on rotting fruits and other sugary substances. They also consume fermenting liquids and alcoholic beverages. Bananas seem to be their favorite among fruits. They puncture the skin of overripe fruits and lay their eggs there. The larvae feed on the decomposing fruit. They only need a warm and moist environment with organic matter to breed and thrive. Colder US states have less of a problem with fruit flies.
