Taco Bell was founded by Glen Bell who first opened a hot dog stand called Bell’s Drive-In in California in 1962. By 1967, it opened its 100th restaurant, and the original Taco Bell’s featured walk-up windows only, no drive-thru service and indoor seating. In 1970, Taco Bell went public with 325 restaurants. Many thought this chain would last forever. It was a popular choice for Mexican and Tex-Mex foods like tacos, burritos, nachos, and quesadillas. It has one of the most affordable menus, yet fewer people are visiting the outlets. So far, about a dozen outlets have closed due to lousy sales. It may still be small compared to other brands closing stores, but it has to begin somewhere. Taco Bell is trying to get back its popularity and consumer base, they even opened a pop-up hotel in Cali. But if things don’t get better, we can expect more closures this 2020.
