Friendly’s started as a single outlet in Massachusetts in 1935 and sold solely ice cream to loyal customers. Eventually, a burger was added to the menu,and five years later, the restaurant-diner business was born. There were once 500 outlets scattered all over the US, but by 2019, only 200 have survived. One single weekend in 2019 saw the closure of 23 restaurants. While it rebounded from a 2011 bankruptcy, 2018 saw a major decline in sales. The company blames the decline on healthier options being offered by competitors. But the company is to be commended for relocating its employees, offering severance pay, or assisting them in other ways. But if they don’t get their act together soon, the ice cream that started it all will simply melt away.
