Tim Hortons

The chain was co-founded by four-time Stanley Cup winner Tim Horton and opened in 1964. The original shop in Ontario, Canada, featured just 2 donut choices: Dutchie and Apple Fritter. It seems the declining trend in sales is only affecting the US locations. The chain is doing well in Canada, and it is reported that about 80% of Canadians eat at their beloved chain at least once a month. So what troubles the US locations, some of which are just a stone’s throw from Canada? Speculation about franchisee problems, regionalization, and too much coffee competition, have all been labeled as areas of blame. While Tim Hortons can be found in 12 US states, they seem to close outlets faster than they can open them. While the company plans to expand to Europe, Asia, and Mexico, it seems that the US stores won’t survive that long. Blame it on Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts.
