Reaching about 18 feet in length, the king cobra is the world’s longest venomous snake. It is said its bite delivers enough neurotoxins to kill an Asian elephant, and it is known to kill at least 50% of the humans it bites. It is found in India and Southeast Asia. It preys chiefly on other snakes, but will defend its territory from anything. It will avoid humans when possible, but at times, people walking through long grass do not see the snake until it is too late. While it is not the most venomous, one bite can deliver about 420mg of toxins. Not all bites though result in envenomation, studies have shown that some bites involve nonfatal doses of toxin. This species is threatened by habitat destruction and deforestation. In India it is placed under the Wildlife Protection Act. Killing a king cobra has a sentence of up to 6 years imprisonment.
