Gaboon Viper

They are found in the rainforests and savannahs of sub-Saharan Africa, and have the longest fangs at 2 inches. This is why their bite is one of the most agonizing pains among snakes. They grow to about 4-5 feet in length, and females are generally heavier and stouter. The head is large and triangular, the neck is narrow, and they appear to have a pair of “horns” between the raised nostrils. They usually like to hide among dry leaves where they are camouflaged. They are slow moving and placid, and are ambush predators. They rarely bite or hiss, unlike other vipers, but when they do bite, it inflicts tremendous pain. Every bite is potentially fatal, and antivenom should be administered as soon as possible. Aside from intense pain, other symptoms are uncoordinated movements like defecation and urination, swelling of the tongue and eyelids, convulsions, and unconsciousness. Bruising and necrosis may be extensive. Healing may be slow, and fatalities from complications may occur.
