A large venomous pit viper found in forested areas of Central and South America. They can grow to be over 12 feet long, and are the longest venomous snake in the Americas. They prefer relatively cool, moist, tropical forests and coastal areas. They are known to be aggressive and fierce, but only a few human attacks have been recorded as they are nocturnal. Their colors range from tan, brown, yellowish, gray, reddish, or at times pale pink with distinct black or dark brown diamond-shaped markings often with yellowish edges. Similar to rattlesnakes, they vibrate their tails vigorously when agitated. But it has no rattle, yet they make quite a loud noise. Their venom affects the circulatory system, causes organ degeneration and tissue damage, vomiting, and severe pain. Fatal if untreated.
