This snake may not be the most venomous, but it has killed more people than other snakes. Primarily because it thrives near populated areas of India, Pakistan, Sri Langka, Africa, and the Middle East. These snakes have a characteristic threat display, rubbing sections of their body together to produce a “sizzling” warning sound. Its venom devastates the tissue around the bite, so many survivors end up losing fingers, toes, or entire limbs. They are not large snakes, usually between 1 to 3 feet long. They are sidewinders and are nocturnal. The egg-laying species resides in Africa, while the live-bearing species inhabit the Middle East and southern Asia. They are also territorial and aggressive, and quick to strike. It is believed that they have killed more humans than all other species combined.
