These are small but venomous snakes found throughout France. They tend to be about a foot long on the average. They are recognizable by their triangular flattened head, and thick but short body. Their color varies from light grey to brown, and various shades of orange with darker marks forming a zig-zag pattern. They prefer dry habitats, sunny slopes, and stone walls. Their first response when disturbed is to look for an escape route, but will defend itself if cornered. Sometimes the first bite is dry – meaning without venom. It serves as a warning to keep away. But their poison can damage, and can be fatal if untreated, to both humans and animals.
