Born in Odense, Denmark, Caroline Wozniacki was a professional tennis player and former world number one in the WTA who said goodbye to the sport following the Australian Open this year. She turned professional in 2005 at age 15 after reaching a career-best number two ranking as a junior and in 2008 won her first WTA tour title at the Nordic Light Open in Stockholm. By 2011, she was dominating the sport on her way to becoming the world’s top female player. However, the only Scandinavian woman to have ever held the number one ranking also had the distinction as the player who had both the most career titles and weeks spent at number one without ever having won a Grand Slam, and struggled in the following years and dropped out of the top ten. That would all change in 2018 when she completed her career resurgence by beating the top-ranked Simona Halep to win the Australian Open. After six years, the resilient Caroline reclaimed the world number 1 ranking. Unfortunately, she was also diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis later that year.
