Maria Sharapova

One of the most successful tennis players ever, on and off the court, Maria Sharapova is the stunning Russian professional tennis player who retired in February of this year at age 32. She turned professional at age 14, but knew at a much earlier age just how special she was. At age 17, she became the fourth-youngest female player ever to win a Grand Slam after defeating two-time champion Serena Williams at the 2004 Wimbledon final. A year later, she was world number one. Known for her long legs and loud grunts, Sharapova swung her way to five Grand Slam titles and the number three spot in the earnings list. A shoulder injury would nag her on and off for the rest of her career starting in 2007, but this did not stop her from becoming just one out of five women in the Open era to have completed the coveted career Grand Slam (winning all four majors) when she won the 2012 French Open. She would win in Roland Garros again in 2014, her last major title before figuring in a doping scandal that saw her get suspended from the tour for 15 months starting in 2016. After a comeback in 2017 marked by a title at the Tianjin Open in China, Sharapova would play the last match of her career at this year’s Australian Open.
