A Canadian gymnast turned track and field athlete focusing on the pole vault, Alysha Newman holds the Canadian record of 4.82m she set at the 2019 Meeting de Paris, beating Olympic and world champion Katerina Stefanidi of Greece for her first Diamond League win. She duplicated the record at the 2019 IAAF Diamond League in Zurich, finished third this time. The Canadian athlete also set the Commonwealth Games Record of 4.75m on her way to the gold at the 2018 games, making up for her bronze finish at the 2014 games in Glasgow. She starred for Eastern Michigan University, becoming Mid-American Conference champion, then moved to the University of Miami, where she majored in exercise physiology, and where broke several records on her way to becoming a five-time NCAA Division I All-American. The 2016 Olympian recently pulled out of the Swiss pole vault exhibition event in relation to her preparations for the 2020 Olympics, which has been pushed back.
