Pole vaulter Allison Stokke first captured the world’s attention when a photo taken of the then 17-year-old high school senior during a competition was posted in the internet and went absolutely viral. The young athlete became an overnight sensation, but not in the way she would have wanted. She started her career in track and field in high school, attending the Newport Harbor High School where as a freshman she broke the American record with a jump of 3.86 meters. She continued to break records the following year, including her own, and became one of the most successful high school athletes in the country with state championships at the CIF California State Meet as well as an eighth-place finish at the national junior championships. She then attended the University of California, Berkeley on a scholarship and competed for the school’s California Golden Bears track team. Although she earned All-American honors, and with a personal best of 4.36 meters, she failed in her bid to qualify for the country’s national team for the 2012 Olympics.
