Never Call Locals By Their Last Names

Westerners normally address people, especially the elderly, using Mr or Ms and their family names. It is a common sign of respect. But things are quite different in Iceland. Instead of respect, you will be insulting the person if you call them by their family name. It is common practice to call people by their first names, no matter who the person is. Similarly, don’t expect the hotel staff to call you by your last name. If your first name is John, that is what they will call you. Though some may add a Mr. John, knowing you are a foreigner. Get used to it.
