Don’t Mess With The Moss

The main vegetation in Iceland is the moss that grows in old lava fields, and the crags of mountains and cliffs. Locals consider these as precious as a coral reef would be to an islander. And they make sure to protect it. The reason for this is that it is a very delicate Arctic flora, and some take a hundred years to grow. Tourists sometimes try to carve their names on it, which is not only rude and obnoxious, but is vandalism and environmental degradation. The damage caused will take decades to heal. Some initials of travellers 50 or so years ago can still be seen on hillsides outside Reykjavik. How irresponsible could they be?
