While most Icelanders understand English, remember it is not their first language. So be prepared for things to be taken literally. Sarcasm, metaphors, and the like will not be understood. Keep your language simple, friendly, and slang-free. If you are not understood, it may be taken as an offense. They may think you are making fun of them. Apparently, they can be very sensitive, so watch your words. Better if you learn some Icelandic words to help them understand what you are trying to say.
