Religion is a private matter for many Swedes. Like money and personal achievements, the locals do not approve of boasting of one’s religious affiliation. Many Swedes are not comfortable with the prominent role of the church in their culture, and several pursue other forms of ritual like nonclerical name-giving ceremonies instead of a sacred christening. But even though Sweden is a secular nation, it is not a non-religious community. In fact, Sweden takes pride in their country’s religious diversity, tolerance, and acceptance of different views and beliefs. With the rising number of migrants and religions, Swedes expect everyone, locals and tourists alike, to respect other people’s faith. You should not tout or push your religion on others because this “assertive” behavior is considered offensive.
