Swedes appreciate a sense of modesty and humility. Expect them to avoid you if you start boasting about yourself or exaggerating your achievements. They’re not impressed with big shows of wealth either, so don’t talk about your investments or how much money you have in the bank. Don’t be gaudy or flashy as well by wearing excessive jewelry or overly bright clothes. Swedes follow a common rule called the “Jantelagen” or the Law of Jante. This code of conduct is defined by ten guidelines that basically state, “You are not to think you’re anyone special or that you’re better than anyone else.” Following this rule, Swedes may frown upon anyone who wants to stand out, to boast purely for attention, or to be regarded as better than others.
