Don’t Worry If You Don’t Speak Swedish

Even though English is not the official language in Sweden, almost everyone in the country can competently converse in English. They have a very high proficiency in English because they’re fairly exposed to the language. Sweden is a multicultural country, and people at school and the workplace make English the common language among different nationalities. Most classes and academic programs are also offered in English. Most content on the internet is also in English, and English movies, TV shows, and other media are not dubbed, further exposing the local consumers and viewers to the language.

However, while Swedes are known for speaking English very well, there are perks to learning Swedish. It is mutually intelligible with Norwegian and Danish, and it is spoken by many people throughout Scandinavia, making it the most spoken North Germanic language. But never mimic The Swedish Chef, a Muppet character who says “Bork, bork, bork” and “Hurdy gurdy, gurdy,” because it’s unlikely the Swedes will appreciate it.
