Meryl Streep

Snakkle

Known by many as the greatest living actress, Meryl Streep has been nominated for an Oscar 21 times — and has won it thrice. She gained interest in acting while she was a student at Vassar, and then enrolled in the Yale School of Drama. Her first role was in the film Julia in 1977, and her next movie, The Deer Hunter in 1978 earned her first Oscar nom. She went on to win the Academy Award for her performances in Kramer vs Kramer and Sophie’s Choice. Her body of work is impressive, and she is still constantly working as an actress — but like many of the other women on this list, is using her status and influence to educate people about the plight of people with no voice. In 2017, she publicly backed the campaign to free Oleg Sentsov, a Ukrainian filmmaker who was subjected to a sham trial and jailed in Siberia for 20 years.
