Cybill Shepherd was born in Memphis, Tennessee to Patty, a homemaker, and William, a small business owner. She was named after her grandfather, Cy, and her father — Bill. Her career began at an early age when she won the “Miss Teenage Memphis” pageant in 1966, and “Model of the Year” contest in 1968. Shepherd soon blossomed into a fashion icon and went on to grace the covers of every major magazine, as well as become spokesperson for L’Oréal. This led to her becoming an actress; her on-screen debut was Peter Bogdanovich’s The Last Picture Show in 1971. She went on to build her career with roles in The Heartbreak Kid, and Taxi Driver, and numerous other projects. Aside from working in the film industry, Shepherd has been an outspoken advocate for issues such as gay rights and abortion rights. In 2009 she received the National Ally for Equality award from the Human Rights Campaign in Atlanta.
