This is a photo of a woman on a longboard in 1967. However, many thousands of years ago that it actually happened, it is generally agreed that the Polynesian culture was the first to create boards from wood to move across the waves. The first version of the modern longboard was known as the olo board, and only the ruling class rode them. Longboard surfing is different from shortboard surfing because you need to walk up and down the board in order to maintain its balance and to help maneuver it, rather than ripping out a turn on a shortboard. The shortboard is harder to learn for beginners than the longboard because of the intense physicality required, however the longboard is considered by many surfers to be more satisfying to surf with, in the long run.
