He’s So Vain

Cloudfront

This is a photo of Carly Simon, the singer of the iconic song, “You’re So Vain”, which was a number one hit in 1973. The song earned Simon a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year, Record of the year, and Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Female Artist. The reason why everyone loved this song was because there was an allusion to who the song was really about, although it was never really said outright during the height of its fame. Over the years, fans speculated that Simon’s self-centered narcissistic ex was none other than actor Warren Beatty, and Simon confirmed that at least one of the verses is about him. “You’re so Vain” was popular in the same way that Taylor Swift’s songs about her breakups are popular — you want the dish on famous people, so you listen to the song. In Simon’s case however, the song itself was a masterpiece. The incendiary subject matter came secondary to the music.
