Fit for a King

Cloudfront

This is a photo of King Henry VIII’s armor. He was set to meet with the French king, Francis I, at the Field of the Cloth of Gold in 1520 for a friendly tournament — typical middle ages stuff. The event was an annual thing, and became an opportunity for one king (and by extension, country) to out-do the other, with both kings striving to present the most impressive display. When the tournament rules were set, Henry’s previous suit of armor was deemed unfit to wear, so a team of metal workers banged out a new suit over the course of three months. It is refreshing to see that Henry was not always as rotund as he is portrayed in royal paintings.
