The Master

Cloudfront

This is a picture of Ip Man, with one of his most famous students, Bruce Lee. Ip Man was a Cantonese martial artist and a master of Wing Chun. When he was a child, he learned Wing Chun from a great master and his top student, then moved to Hong Kong at the age of 16. He was beaten sorely in a Kung Fu battle with a man named Leung Bik, who unbeknownst to him at the time, was the son of the man who taught his own master in China. Ip went back to China to become a police officer and to serve in the Second Sino-Japanese War. At the tail end of 1949 after the Chinese Communist Party won the civil war, Ip, his wife, and their eldest daughter fled to Hong Kong as Ip was an officer for the Kuomintang, and would have been in danger in Mao’s communist China. He stayed in Hong Kong while his wife went back to China to retreive their identity cards, however the borders between China and Hong Kong were closed in 1951, and they were separated for good. He had established a martial arts practice in Hong Kong, but due to financial troubles, ended up turning to opium — which was still a very popular drug in Hong Kong at the time. He died in 1972 in his apartment in Hong Kong, seven months before his student Bruce Lee passed away
