Cloudfront

This is a picture of Janis Joplin, standing in her apartment near Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco. Joplin died of a heroin overdose on 4 October 1970, when she was 27 years old. Joplin is part of what is known as the 27 Club, which includes popular musicians, artists, actors, and athletes who have died at age 27. Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison all died at the age of 27 between 1969 and 1971; Kurt Cobain died in 1994 from suicide at age 27; and the blues musician Robert Johnson, who died in 1938, is the earliest popular musician who is included in the members of the 27 Club. Seventeen years after Cobain’s death, singer Amy Winehouse died at the age of 27, three years after she expressed a fear of dying at that age. Television actor Jonathan Brandis died of suicide in 2003 at the age of 27, and Anton Yelchin from the Star Trek franchise died at the age of 27 in a car crash.
