The Mobile Phone

Cloudfront

This is an ad from 1964 by General Electric, introducing their Simultaneous Duplex Mobile Telephone which was marketed as a huge improvement over the current Mobile Telephone service at the time. The main selling point was that the Simultaneous Duplex Mobile Telephone (and no, we don’t know why it is Simultaneously a Duplex) allowed users to connect to the person they were calling directly, instead of having to go through a switchboard operator. While the ad claims that the caller can place and receive calls from anywhere in the world, it is more likely that the wireless system acted like a CB radio, allowing you to place “calls” anywhere in the five-mile radius.
