Good Ole Boys Singing

Cloudfront

This is a picture of Buddy Holly at his last performance. The Winter Dance Party Tour had Holly and other performers travelling from venue to venue in the bitter January cold. After their concert in the Surf Ballroom, Holly chartered a plane to carry the performers to bring himself and the other artists to the next venue in Moorhead, Minnesota. There wasn’t enough room for everyone, so only Buddy Holly, Richie Valens (known for the smash hit La Bamba), and the Big Bopper were on the flight. The weather was particularly bad, and it is said that the pilot was rather inexperienced, and used only the instruments as a guide. On 3 February 1959, just after one in the morning, the plane with the performers crashed into a cornfield in Iowa. All the passengers were ejected from the aircraft and killed on impact. The plane crash has become known as “the day the music died”.
