Slice of Life

Cloudfront

This is a picture of a young Audrey Hepburn, arranging flowers and leaves in a bowl, while wearing a sundress. She is presumably at home, not wearing any makeup, and seems to be relaxed, although startled by the sudden photo. She was born in Ixelles, Brussels, and spent parts of her childhood in Belgium, England, and the Netherlands. Her first starring role was in the 1951 Broadway play, Gigi, after being spotted by the auteur of the show. She acted in a great many plays throughout the 60s and 70s, but later in life, devoted much of her time to UNICEF, working in some of the poorest communities of Africa, South America, and Asia between 1988 and 1992. She died of appendiceal cancer at home in Switzerland, aged 63, just one month after receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
