Berlin City Rollers

Cloudfront

This is a photo of three children roller skating in Berlin, taken in 1910. The first recorded use of roller skates was at a London stage performance in 1743, and the inventor of these skates is unknown. In 1818, roller skates appeared on the ballet stage in Berlin. Fifty years or so later, roller skating became a very big recreational activity around the world. It saw its heyday in the 1970s when disco and roller disco became popular around America, as well as in the 1990s when inline skates, also known as rollerblades, became popular again due to the cultural touchpoints at the time of street culture, ice skating, and hockey. Eventually, extreme sports would emerge, with blading, as it is now called, at the forefront of various competitions.
