Apparently, the reason behind this genetic testing goes all the way back to 1936 when one of the Olympians that competed came fourth in the women’s high-jump event, and also went on to win a number of other awards. It was eventually found out that Dora Ratjen had been identified as male then female at birth, but lived her life as a woman. And she wasn’t the first athlete to be caught up in such scandals either. Another one was Helen Stephens, and while she was inspected and tested positive as female, it was eventually found out that she was considered “intersex” after her death in a 1980 mugging where her autopsy proved she wasn’t completely female.
