Considering that the Olympics first began in Greece as an ode to the god Zeus, it should come as no surprise that the franchise still pays its respects to its origins. But in 1921, the Olympic committee decided it was time to give it an upgrade, and have a contest to see who could come up with the best design for the medals. The winner happened to be an Italian man named Guiseppe Cassioli who came up with a design that had the goddess Nike of victory, but he also added the Roman Colosseum, which at the time no one really seemed to notice, or something they chose to ignore.
