Grayback had sent her last radio message to port. However, the men weren’t worried then. They knew it usually took time for submarines to surface and report. They had expected her to dock at Midway Atoll at around March 7, 1944. That was the date anticipated and navy commanders were expecting to hear from her soon. Unfortunately, there was no sign of her and the crew at all. They expected delays, but three weeks later, no one had heard anything. It was radio silence from Grayback’s end. Hence, the authorities were left with no choice but to declare her and the 8- crew members as lost at sea. They did this with heavy hearts on March 30.
