Gaining an Ally

Maternity Week

On this cruise, the Grayback came across a Japanese convoy. The men immediately torpedoed the merchant ship Yodogawa Maru and sank her. Then, a few days later, the US vessel one again torpedoed an enemy destroyer and damaged it greatly. She sank cargo ships, such as the England Maru, and hit two more along the way. She had been extremely triumphant. She then sailed back to Pearl Harbor and on to San Francisco, California, for a refit. On September 12, 1943, she was back for another Pacific mission. This was the eighth and this was headed by Commander John Anderson Moore. Merely two weeks after her return, the Grayback set off for Midway Atoll. This time, she had the U.S.S. Shad as her ally.
