Continuing Its Legacy

Maternity Week

The loss of the first Grayback didn’t mean the end. A second Grayback submarine went into service in July 1957. It was meant to continue its legacy 14 years after the first craft sank. She was fittingly launched by Mrs. Virginia S. Moore, the widow of the final skipper and leader, Commander John A. Moore. The new vessel was built at California’s Mare Island Naval Shipyard. She was equipped with cutting-edge technology, a big improvement from her highly acclaimed predecessor. To start with, the second version included guided missiles, technology that had not been available in 1941.
