Ending with a Big Bang

Maternity Week

By 1982, the Grayback ran into an bad luck. To start with, she came into an accident that ultimately took the lives of five Navy divers. These five men had been commissioned to go on a training dive while she cruised in Subic Bay, Philippines. This was when an important ventilation valve gave way. The unfortunate group died while they were inside a decompression chamber. Then, the Navy finally decided to decommission her in January 1984. That is, until she completed her final mission. She had to be decorated in glaring orange. With the new paint, she was towed out to Subic Bay on April 13, 1986. The change in color scheme meant that she was going to be used for target practice. And from that, the Grayback’s colorful story ended.
