Its Ups and Downs

Maternity Week

The second Grayback sailed from the Pearl Harbor base and made a series of travels. These cruises served as a deterrent. She explored the waters off Alaska and Japan. She did this until 1963. She was constantly at work and on patrol as she spent most of her time underwater. Unfortunately, it wasn’t always smooth sailing. The rigid schedule took a toll the hard work meant that there was wear and tear. She went near the surface to recharge her batteries and was caught in rough seas. The strong waves knocked the main battery, and as a result, a fire broke out in the crew’s sleeping quarters. One died while five others were injured. However, after a couple of weeks in repair, the Grayback was back on active service. It took several weeks for her repair, but soon after that, she was back on active duty.
