Her Very Last Mission

Maternity Week

On December 2, 1943, the Grayback set off again for the East China Sea. During her ninth mission, the submarine fired all her torpedo supply in just five days. She was able to sink four Japanese ships before returning once again to Pearl Harbor. Commander Moore’s exploits on that tour had earned him another prestigious Navy Cross. She stayed in Pearl Harbor for just over three weeks. Then, she sail for her tenth – and, sadly, her last – active service mission on January 28, 1944. After that, she was never heard from again. And as mentioned previously, her last radio contact with base happened on February 25. When no one had heard from her or seen her, the Navy was forced to declare her lost at sea on March 30.
