The Grayback had to undergo regular maintenance, as with any submarine at that time. As soon as she was cleared to go from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, she headed to Pearl Harbor in February 1942. She needed to be there since the US had officially become a part of the conflict with Japan. Things were getting serious and the crew had to step up their game. On February 15, she set off on her first ever wartime patrol. She headed for the Pacific as she cruised along the Guam Islands, as these had been attacked by Japan on December 1941.
