On January 28, 1944, the Grayback left port to embark on a combat patrol from Pearl Harbor. This wasn’t her first time out to see. In fact, she was on her tenth mission. Little did everyone realize that this would be her last one as well. It left the Hawaiian island and before disappearing beneath the deep blue sea, the crew sent a message to port on February 24. The men said that they were able to sink the Japanese freighters Toshin Maru and Taikei Maru. They also said that they were able to hit others as well. Just as everyone was able to breathe a sigh of relief, the Grayback and its crew were actually in for a fate worse than death.
