The following night, two submariners were able to successfully bring the six survivors back to the Grayback. The mission was headed by the boat’s captain, Commander Edward C. Stephan. He had succeeded Saunders in September 1942, and during which, he had been awarded the Navy Cross and the US Army Silver Star for a job well done.
