There are still lots of sequels that made it big, better than their originals. Sometimes the originals are real flops, and the sequel saves it somehow. Seems that a lot of superhero movies tend to have better sequels, as audiences need to get more from the new movie to make it interesting. Same goes with horror flicks and animations. It is not easy to make a sequel better than the original, especially if the original proves to be a hit. But that is the magic that directors and writers bring to the screen. It is what is expected by the producers, to say the least. There will always be dissenting opinions from fans and critics, but that is to be expected.
