Odell Barnes Jr.’s case was quite controversial. He already had a record for previous robbery charges, but the case of Helen Bass was not just robbery, but assault and murder. According to Barnes, he had just gone into her house to steal while she was at work, but she was found beaten, bloody, and shot in the head, and even reportedly raped. While he maintained his innocence, his fingerprints were found in her home, and when he was caught, he had a gun in his possession which actually belonged to Bass. He was tried in court and found guilty, and put on death row.
