Moraes is the co-owner of Brazil’s Votorantim Group. She and her brother inherited this from their father, José Ermírio de Moraes who died in 2014. The Votorantim Group is one of the biggest conglomerates in Brazil, which produces cement, metals, energy, steel, and orange juice. Last year they had a revenue of $8 billion. Maria’s father started the conglomerate when he bought a textile factory in Sao Paulo in 1918. Moraes’ late husband Clovis Scripilliti helped expand Votorantim throughout Brazil in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Votorantim currently operates in 20 countries in the aluminum, cement, pulp and paper, agribusiness, and energy industries. The Moraes family still controls 100% of the company. They also share control of the publicly traded Suzano, the world’s largest producer of eucalyptus pulp.
