She is the controlling shareholder of Thomson Reuters Corporation, which her grandfather Roy Thomson founded in 1934. Her investment firm Woodbridge controls Thomson Reuters. She is Canada’s richest woman, and also owns Vista Radio and Viking Air. She is the only child of Irma Thomson, one of Roy’s 2 daughters. Sherry also invested in real-estate, oil and gas. In 1969, she authored a series of articles about pollution that sparked the Canadian environment movement. Her early years as an activist was focused on protesting strict abortion laws. She was one of the 30 women who chained themselves to the seats in the House of Commons in dissent. After she left the university, she worked as a journalist in Australia, and travelled to Thailand where she fell in love with Thai culture. In 1979, she purchased a run-down hotel in Toronto and renovated it to open a women’s networking club. She expanded it to include a Thai restaurant and spa called the Elmwood. Both still exist today.
