Always be polite to strangers, do not ignore them as that is considered rude. Particularly if they greet you or simply smile at you as you walk by. Be polite always. Greet them with a Buenos dias ! (good morning), Buenas tardes ! (good afternoon), or Buenas noches! (good evening), when you see other people in an elevator, restaurant, bar, etc. This is also true for service staff like waiters, taxi drivers, doormen, etc. Smiling also helps.
